5. Búzios
Stay
About the destination: Armação dos Búzios often referred to as just Búzios, is a resort town and a municipality located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Today, Búzios is a popular getaway from the city and a worldwide tourist site, especially among Brazilians and Argentinians. In the early 1900s Búzios was popular with the Carioca’s high society, who wanted to escape from the chaotic city life of Rio de Janeiro and enjoy over 23 beaches that the peninsula offers. But it wasn’t until 1964, when the French actress Brigitte Bardot visited Búzios, that it grew to be a popular tourist destination. Today, the peninsula is a travelling site that offers calmness, direct contact with nature and scenic views. The west coast beaches offer calm, clear waters while the east coast ones, facing the open sea, are more wild and draw surfers and water sports enthusiasts. Azeda, Ferradura, João Fernandes, Armação, and Geribá, are the most popular beaches in town and to the surf. At night, Rua das Pedras, Buzios' main street, offers its visitors an active nightlife and a great variety of shopping and restaurants. MAIN TOURIST ATTRACTIONS • Beaches The west-facing beaches generally offer calm water while the ones facing the open sea, to the east, attract surfers, windsurfers and kite enthusiasts. Clockwise around the peninsula, the main beaches are. o Praia Rasa. First beach on the left as you arrive from Rio de Janeiro. Wind surfing and kite surfing and a few pousadas but a bit off the beaten track. o Praia de Manguinhos. An extension of Praia Rasa, closer to the downtown area and with more accommodation. o Praia da Tartaruga. o Praia do Canto. The harbour for the downtown area rather than a beach. Lots of accommodation. o Praia da Armação and Praia dos Ossos. o Praia João Fernandes. This is an upmarket residential area but the beach is disappointingly small and at high tide there is little room. o Praia Brava. Surfing beach exposed to the Atlantic. Few facilities. o Praia Olho de Boi. Naturist beach reached by following a 500m trail from Praia Brava. Take your own refreshments. o Praia do Forno. Attractive toe-shaped beach with one small bar. o Praia de Ferradura. Large, sheltered beach for swimmers not surfers. A few bars where the vans stop. One upmarket pousada but little else in the way of accommodation. o Praia Ferradurinha. Attractive small beach that can get rather crowded. Only reachable by car if you want to pay R10 an hour for one of the few parking places. Park at or take a van to Praia de Geribá and walk. From Praia Ferraderinha the fit can swim to Praia dos Amores (Lovers’ Beach), where it is said that “two arrive and three leave”. o Praia de Geribá. Popular beach with many bars and restaurants and pousadas either on the beach or in the blocks behind it or on the overlooking hill. Good surfing location and there are several people offering surfing lessons (look for the upright surfboards in the sand). o Praia Tucuns. Long, almost deserted beach with no facilities other than a large, unattractive resort at the far end. • Rua das Pedras (street of stones) is a street that gives its name to the downtown area on the north coast that offers restaurants, shopping and nightlife. • Statue of Brigette Bardot. The peninsula was popularized by Brigitte Bardot in the 1960s, and a statue of her can be found on the sea front a short distance east of the wharf in the downtown area. • The views. There are several viewpoints (mirantes) around Buzios. On the top of a hill close to Praia Brava there is a tower that offers good views of much of the peninsula. The road up to it is not very good but it is just about reachable with an ordinary saloon car.

13. Joao Pessoa
Stay
About the destination: João Pessoa, capital of the state of Paraíba, is often called “the city where the sun rises first” because it sits on the easternmost point of the Americas. Less crowded than Rio or Salvador, it offers a relaxed coastal atmosphere with long, palm-fringed beaches and a charming historic center. The pace is slow, the streets are surprisingly green, and the city’s mix of Portuguese colonial architecture and modern neighborhoods makes it an ideal introduction to Brazil’s Northeast. The waterfront is João Pessoa’s main draw. Beaches like Tambaú, Cabo Branco, and Manaíra form a continuous urban shoreline, perfect for walking, jogging, or cycling along the promenade at sunrise. From Tambaú beach, catamaran tours head out to the natural pools of Picãozinho at low tide, where you can snorkel among colorful fish. A short drive south leads to more dramatic scenery at Coqueirinho and Tambaba, with cliffs, viewpoints, and quieter stretches of sand for a full-day beach escape. Culture and history are centered in the old town, known as Centro Histórico. Here you’ll find cobbled streets, pastel-colored houses, and landmarks such as the São Francisco Church and Convent, one of the most beautiful baroque complexes in Brazil’s Northeast. Museums, small galleries, and restored squares give a sense of the city’s past, while local markets showcase regional crafts and products like lace, ceramics, and cachaça. No visit is complete without witnessing the sunset at Jacaré Beach, just outside the main urban area. As the sun sinks over the Paraíba River, musicians play Ravel’s “Bolero” from boats and the riverside boardwalk, turning the end of the day into a small open-air spectacle. Combined with a rich local cuisine—fresh seafood, tapioca pancakes, and dishes based on sun-dried meat and regional fruits—João Pessoa offers a balanced mix of nature, culture, and authenticity that rewards travelers looking beyond Brazil’s most famous cities.

Around the square you will also find the Palacio do Planalto, the City Museum, the Supremo Tribunal Federal, the Nation’s Pantheon and the Lucio Costa Hall. The city prides itself on its urban parks, such as Vaca Brava, Flamboyant, and Areião, where locals jog, ride bikes, and gather for sunset picnics around small lakes. These green spaces are perfect for unwinding after a day of sightseeing and offer a great window into everyday life in the region. Families will find playgrounds, open lawns, and plenty of shade from the tropical sun. Goiânia is also a gateway to the culture and flavors of Brazil’s Midwest. Local cuisine is hearty and rustic, with specialties like “pequi” (a local fruit with a strong, unique flavor), “empadão goiano” (a rich savory pie), and plenty of dishes based on corn and cassava. Traditional “sertanejo” music is the soundtrack to many bars and clubs, and live music venues often stay busy late into the night. From bustling street markets to lively weekend fairs, the city rewards travelers who take the time to explore beyond Brazil’s better-known tourist routes.

About the destination: Campinas, located about 100 kilometers northwest of São Paulo, is a dynamic university city that blends innovation, culture, and a relaxed Brazilian lifestyle. Known as a major technology and research hub, it is home to renowned institutions like the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) and several tech parks. Despite its modern profile, Campinas preserves a charming historical center, with 19th‑century buildings, lively squares, and traditional cafés that reflect its coffee‑boom heritage. Visitors will find plenty of green spaces to escape the urban bustle. Portugal Park (Parque Portugal), often called Lagoa do Taquaral, is the city’s best‑known leisure area, offering a picturesque lagoon, jogging and cycling tracks, paddleboats, and a charming replica of a streetcar that circles the park. For families, the Bosque dos Jequitibás is a pleasant urban forest with walking trails, a small zoo, and playgrounds. Nearby, the Ecological Park of Campinas provides broader natural landscapes ideal for picnics and relaxed strolls. Culture lovers can explore museums such as the Museum of Image and Sound (MIS) and the Contemporary Art Museum of Campinas, as well as theatres that host concerts and plays throughout the year. The city’s nightlife revolves around bar‑lined streets in neighborhoods like Cambuí, where you’ll find everything from relaxed pubs to sophisticated cocktail bars. Campinas is also a strong dining destination, with restaurants serving both contemporary Brazilian cuisine and international dishes, alongside traditional churrascarias for authentic grilled meats. Campinas makes an excellent base for exploring the surrounding countryside of São Paulo state. Within a short drive, you can reach the charming town of Sousas, the Serra Negra region in the Circuito das Águas, and the wine and coffee routes that showcase rural landscapes and local products. Well connected by highways and with its own international airport, Viracopos, Campinas is easy to include in a broader Brazilian itinerary while offering enough attractions and comfort to merit a stay of its own.
